4th of July week

This will be the first time in 6 years that my wife and I haven't traveled to Minnesota for the week of the 4th of July. We have typically taken this week off and visited her parents there for the week, but since they live 6 blocks away from us in Illinois that trip will probably not ever happen again.

There were a lot of good memories made up there. It's really where I first got to know my wife before we got married. I went up there with some of our friends and her for a long weekend trip. It's also where I first got to know her parents as well and I thought I could see myself enjoying this family. It's where my daughter first got in a pool. It's where I got mono! It's also where I've done more fishing than anywhere else.

We're gonna miss those trips.

My son's favorite word this year made it into a song by one of his favorite artists, Randall Goodgame. I missed his initial reaction when he heard this song, but my wife said it was hilarious. I don't think he could believe that someone would sing a song about poop. Way to go Randall Goodgame! Way to write a song that sticks in your head and that's catchy and includes the word poop in it. The worst thing that can happen is...

Just ask. The worse thing that can happen when you ask for something is the other person says no. And then you'll at least know they don't agree or that what you're wanting to do may not be possible. But, if you don't ask you'll never know if what you want to do hinges on someone else's approval or permission. Just ask. You might be surprised at the response or it may get you moving in the direction you want to go sooner than being timid and waiting.

Be brave and ask for help

We were at the library yesterday and my daughter wanted to find some Doc McStuffins books. I told her she could ask the librarian for help to figure out where they might be if she really wanted them, but she was going to have to ask. I told her I'd go with her. It took a little coaxing, and the librarian was really patient. But, she did get the words out and the librarian helped her find a Doc McStuffins book. Plus, she asked my daughter if she wanted to go in the back and find another Doc McStuffins book that had just been returned. So Josie got to go in the back with the librarian and find the book that had just gotten returned. It was kind of a fun teaching moment for me with Josie. If she hadn't asked the librarian for help she probably wouldn't have found those books and she definitely wouldn't have gotten to go by herself in the back with the librarian to find a second Doc McStuffins book.
