The carnival of apps
How many apps do you have on your phone? Do you know? How many should you have?
I have 127 apps, plus the apps that came on my iPhone from Apple. That's a lot of apps. I'm surprised actually. There are only 4 screens that all of those apps fit in I believe. Do I use all of those apps regularly? No.
Which apps do I use the most? Which ones are my go-to apps when I'm "bored"? Typically it's Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter first. Then Marco Polo if there's something new that someone's shared... or I might check my personal email to just see if there's something I need to respond to. I might then go the stock app, or my banking app. The other apps that I've gravitated more to have been around habits or points. Like Virgin Pulse where I receive money for reporting information on my health or the Habit app where I can keep track of things like whether I blogged today or anything else that I deem as important to keep track of.
So what's my point here? How many apps do we need? What are they for? I have game apps, designer apps, information apps, entertainment apps, restaurant apps,... most I haven't looked at in a long time. I guess another couple that I use regularly are music and podcast apps (I forgot to mention those above).
Even those that I look at more regularly though. Perhaps even my top apps. I'm wondering if I would use my time better if some of these apps weren't on my phone. It is so easy when I get home from work and haven't really check social media yet to instead of helping my wife with the kids that she's been with all day, click on a social app and get sucked into the mindless stuff that's been posted most recently. What if those just weren't on my phone for a month?
Do I need a carnival of apps? What should I use my phone for?
It might be time to reevaluate what apps I really need on my phone.
